Patent process begins with an individual obtaining a warrant from the State or Crown for a certain number of acres. All or part of the warrant could be sold or used for different tracts. No book shows the transfer of the warrant.

(Transfer shows in Certificate of Survey documents).

Note: The Warrant Index may be the only time an individual shows up in the state. He could sell the warrant and leave the area.

Warrant then presented to the County Surveyor who then checked his books for vacant land. If land was vacant a survey was made and a Certificate of Survey was completed. Records then sent to the State Land Office for review. Patent issued to owner after a record review was completed and fees paid. Ownership transfers at this time.
