Fort Tonoloway Land Owners (Washington County)

How did the fort come to be? Where is the fort located? Who were the people living in the area of the fort during the French & Indian War?
Fort Tonoloway (also known as Stodderts Fort) lies west of Hancock. Built in 1755 by order of Governor Horatio Sharpe and commanded by Lieutenant William Stoddert. The fort was abandoned in 1756 with resources moved to Fort Frederick.
The exact location of the fort is unknown. Information as to the location is quite limited. With the use of maps and historical information I will attempt to provide clues to its location.
The information will also cover a few individuals who owned property where the fort is believed to be located. Along with persons living nearby some of whom met a violent end at the hands of the Indians.
